Want to opt out of unfranked unaddressed junk mail?

Apparently on the Breakfast Programme they gave out the following e-mail address to write to if you want to opt out of receiving all the unaddressed & unfranked junk mail which the Post Office regularly delivers through out letter boxes. (This stuff apparently isn't covered by the Postal Mailing Preference Service)

Just e-mail them giving your full address and post code & saying you want your property to be exempted from this service.

Is this the address that the Postman in South Wales put on a flier to give all his customers - causing a great upset and threat of sacking? Just seen it on teletext with very few details. I guessed that it was something that is available but which the post office do not want us to know about as it causes them extra work.

Hey, guess what - I am a postman and I have never heard of that. Royal Mail accepts contracts to deliver unaddressed mail AS MAIL, mail which has 5 days to be delivered, but mail nevertheless. The contract specifies areas and DOES NOT specify addresses NOT to be delivered to. Anyway, as mail, if it has been paid for, Royal Mail are legally obliged to deliver it.

Just saw Kay's post too - This refers to the mailing preference service and has nothing to do with the Royal mail - it's aimed mainly at the firms who organise and send the stuff. I'd happily give you the address but, as you said, another postman did that and has been threatened with the sack. However googling that, or even doing a search on here, will find you the details.

Obviously, Royal mail is not going to promote knowledge of this as it would affect income, and without that income, that would affect what you send. Or put another way, you wouldn't get mail delivered, you'd have to pick it up.

To reduce mail addressed to the 'occupier' or 'householder' you can write to

or call 08457 950 950 and ask for your address to be removed from their database.

I opted out of Royal Mail door to door about 12 months ago, and signed up for the MPS 3 years ago.

It works! It really does work. I also have a sign above my letter box:

''Royal Mail Post only No junk mail, leaflets, flyers or free papers"

If I am at home I lock my letter box after the postman has been, and unlock it just before I go to bed. It stays locked all Sunday.

It is certainly worth doing.

Please be aware that stopping unaddressed mail can mean that you may not receive important notices and leaflets from the government and your local council

I haven't yet missed out any important information. It can all be accessed on-line. I can even read my local free paper on-line.

And I do talk to my neighbours. :)

I also tried to opt out by using this e-mail address and found the page no longer available. I reckon that Royal Mail has now blocked this e-mail address because of the enormous amount of publicity this has received in the media last 48 hours. Or perhaps their mail server has crashed because of the huge number of people who don't want this type of junk mail and are now trying to opt out because previously they didn't know how to go about it.

Oh well, back to pen and ink and snail mail. I suspect their excuse is nothing to do with security. Perhaps they're just forcing everybody to spend money on postage stamps rather than sending e-mail to recroup some of the profit they've just lost on future lucrative contracts for delivering junk mail !!

Incidentally, you will not miss out on local council delivered information by opting out. I checked with my local council on this point a few weeks ago.

This has been building up for years since the MPS started, sorry to inform you Postdog but your Boss has been on the TV several times this week saying that they have done this for many years now, I can't believe that your round has had no junk deliveries! Tell me where it is I'll live there!

Also the Postie was suspended for delivering a leaflet explaining to his customers how to stop the Royal Mail junk not for the addressed junk.

In the area we have just moved from, we were constantly barraged with takeaways, windows, tree surgeons, ironing, you name it, plus the people tha actually call at the door and expect a civil response (they were disappointed at my door).

Mrs Pegasus might change her view if, as some councils are considering, you have to pay by weight of your dustbins, it will then cost YOU to dispose of this unwanted rubbish.

I think that Royal Mail will now be deluged by requests to stop this blight on our modern society, I personally have another favourite... I simply collect it all (and the neighbours) and stuff it back in the local postbox until it is jammed full... if everyone did this, I'm sure they would get the right message.

Sorry Postdog, having re read your post, I think that in my first sentence in the previous answer I had got the wrong idea.

I think I have it now... so even using the opt out system, there is no provision for you at the delivery stage to know which houses have opted out? Hmmmm!

i dont know if the system works the same now, but i worked for royal mail for 13 years, and at that time the man on footies was paid by the item to post household deliveries.
if this is still the case stopping the delivery of these items to your door will be removing a portion of the delivery mans salary.
