DVD inventory / Database

I have over 400 dvds. One of my greatest fears would be to be burgled and all my dvds stolen. I have recently been adding all my dvd to an online dvd database and a dvd databse programme on my pc, which includes all the dvd's UPC codes.

If were to get burgled would the insurers take this a proof? Should I also keep a photographic record?

Spaced, I do exactly the same thing. Not sure about the insurance as the DVDs value is different to that for which you purchased them often no more that 50p each. It might help if you actually contact your insurance company and ask them. However your list would be of help to the police should they come across similar items at the suspect's property or such.

i would always claim an average or a "current cost" for a dvd. I would in no way accept 50p per dvd. Insurers would be able to search a dvd and see how much it would cost to replace.

Vehicle insurers try to do this, and offer "trade" value, but as a fleet manager (up on most things "cars") I have always succedded in getting market value for a written off vehicle.

Just as an aside - get a UV pen (may be available from your local police crime prevention unit) and mark your postcode and house number on the DVD boxes. Can't be seen in normal light, but if they are stolen and recovered, it would lead the police right to you.

I have a similar collection and was advised by my insurance company to keep a list of all dvds and photos of them in their cabinets - they said as long as I had a photo of a large collection in my house and an individual list they would be happy. I did have to mention the collection as a specific item of value because they said they would look at the cost of the whole collection rather than individual items.
