What would be the best thing to do under the circumstances - other than a power of attorney

Contact the Royal National Institute for the Blind - they have loads of information and advice on what to do. But there is no need to have a PoA just because someone is going blind. RNIB can arrange to provide stuff on tape or braille so that the person can deal with their affairs themselves.
Buy them a pair of dark glasses and a labrador.
