Noisy Tumble dryer

I have recently moved to a link-detached house & have been constantly trying to sleep over next door's tumble dryer which is in their garage & runs all night long. I spoke to the husband on Friday who seemed very understanding & said they would not turn it on at night anymore so I came away happy.......however, ever since then they have had it running all night again hence I am now getting extremely grumpy because I am having no sleep! What should be mine & my husbands next move? We don't want to move house & we are shattered!!! Please help.....

I really feel for you both. That is so annoying! Perhaps the next step is to write them a polite letter, explaining the problem and asking them to please soundproof the room the dryer is in or not to use it after a certain time at night. Remind the husband in the letter that he did promise to make sure this would not happen anymore. But whatever you write ... keep it polite and friendly. After all, you do have to live next to them long term and won't want to end up with a nasty glaring competition every time you walk out your door. Keep a copy of the letter, so that you have proof that you did in fact approach them in this manner. If this doesn't work, ask the CAB for assistance in finding a cheap solicitor who will approach them for you and if necessary take further steps. Hopefully this will not be necessary. Even cheaper, keep a diary of the dates and times and level of noise compared to other activity (can you hear TV, are there contant vibrations, etc). Then take the matter up with your Environmental Protection officers at the Council who have powers to deal with it.

How loud is this tumble drier? I can't imagine a tumble drier making enough noise to keep most people awake, which I think is where your problems lie, that you'll be hard pressed to prove the level of noise is sufficient to constitute a nuisance.They generally are not noisy things in the big scheme of things.

Well, when I spoke to the husband, he said 'oh yeah it is a cranky old thing' so I think they realise it is quite noisy. In general daytime it's probably not that bad, but at night when everything is quiet all we can hear is the drum turning round & clicking and the vibration. Im a light sleeper but my husband isn't and he can hear it too. The thing that has annoyed me most is the fact that he said 'no problem we won't run it at night anymore' because they 'usually dont' and then they do the opposite???

Record the noise and then when it's on, play it loudly outside their bedroom window so they can here what you are hearing, when they turn it off so do you, eventually even dumb animals can learn a punishment/reward system, they'll get the message. I can't understand why it's not keeping them awake as well!

Just one consolation think how high their electricity bill must be. Dryers cost a fortune to run
