I have just purchased a second hand car, but it has no tax disc.It has a valid MOT, and I have just sorted out my insurance online, but I wont get the cover note until tomorrow so cannot get a tax disc until then.I need to drive my car home (about 2 miles) and the car will be left on a public road in front of my house overnight.Am I breaking the law by driving the car with no tax?Also, if someone reported me for parking the car overnight on a public road without a tax disc, can I be prosecuted?

In short, yes you are breaking the law. But as long as you prove that you have only just purchased the car, and that you have paid for your cover note, I don't think the law will do much to you. That's if you get caught of course.

simple solution is to wait till tomorrow and tax it on the way to picking it up.

i was informed when i bought a new car that i was ok to drive it home with no tax so you may be ok there,def breaking the law parking on a public road with no tax.

no tax is a civil offence and no points on licence. as long as you have mot & ins and you tax the car next day or that night online you should be ok.
if you have got a tax disc online then the plod database will know this and they'll leave you allone.

You will be ok, it is unlikely you will be seen without tax but if you explain you will be ok ,after all you will be paying tax for all of last week when you get your tax tommorow.

its called 'failure to display' doesnt matter if you have a tax disk in your glovebox, pocket etc if its isnt displayed on the car - instant fine if youre found out.
