My first child was born almost 40 years ago and things were very different in those days. Medical decisions and actions were never queried - patients just did what they were told. I feel that i was badly treated after the birth but only now do i feel brave enough to want to ask questions. Is it likely my notes will still be around, and would i be able to access them?

Different hospitals have different policies re record retention so it is impossible to say.

Firstly, contact your GP practice and tell them you want to view your medical records. You are entitled to do this - you will probably have to make an appointment. Take a pen and paper so that you can copy relevant parts you may want explained.

Telephone the hospital concerned and do the same thing. They may refer you to the archive office - but should certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

Be prepared to put your request into writing - this may be standard practice. Remember to quote the Data Protection Act 1998, which gives you the right to view your records.

Good luck!
