My dad's mother has recently passed away and she lived in a very rural part of County Mayo, Ireland. The eldest son has been told that because he is the eldest son, he gets everything, no matter what. Just because he is the eldest. Is that right? To my knowledge, she never left a will.

No. Unless there's a will the estate will be divided equally amongst the siblings.

In the past, there was a tradition that the eldest got the farm, but there's no basis in Irish law for that, and your father has every right to claim his inheritance. The estate will need to go through probate before any deeds are signed over, and the only way that the eldest gets everything is if your father quite literally signs his rights away. Consult a solicitor - this is a very simple claim.
