i joined a gym a year ago and have hardly ever been (as you do). i have tried to cancel my membership but they say i can only do it if i move 15 miles or more away, otherwise i have to stay a member and pay the monthly fee for another year. is there anyway i can get out of this, how serious are contracts like that?

If so and it was a two year membership then thats about that and you are obliged to pay for the two years that you signed and agreed to do.
If your membership is only for a year and your year is up - then it's rubbish and only their sly tactics to try and get you to re-sign for another year.
Contracts are contracts and thats why we are asked to read them before signing them.
If you are obliged to pay for another year then try and use the facilities as much as possible and try and get your moneys worth.

Well that's not going to work as they will just chase you for the money as the contract will still be active.
As almcd007 says, it will depend on how long the contract is for and what the cancellation procedures are in the T&Cs that you should have read before you signed (in an ideal world!)
The moral of the story, don't sign something if you don't want to be bound by the T&Cs of it.
