Gas cookers

I have heard that there has to be clearance of 750mm of clearance above the hob of a gas cooker to comply with the law.

Does this just apply if there is a cooker hood or can it be 750mm of tiles above. We have about 400mm of tiles and then wallpaper although the glass top that folds up only touches the tiles.

No one seems to know.

Hope to hear from any gas fitters! Thanks
