an extension was built on my house 20 years ago and is now suffering from serious subsidance due to poor footings. I there any redress on the builder ??

Almost certainly not - its too long ago - but there's nothing to stop you trying if you know who they are. The building should have had building regs. approval from the local authority. You could approach them & ask if they have any records of what happened (but I think they absolve themselves of any responsibility if anything does go wrong - even though they have to inspect the work & one of the things they should inspect is the footings.)
