My boyfriend is facing a common assault charge, i went to see he solicitor today to give a statement about this and the solicitor has said i need to attend the court day. Do i legally have to go to this as i'm going to find it very difficult to get this time off work

On the say so of a solicitor, no you do not.

If summonsed by the court itself (via the CPS), then definately yes.

As a witness, your work are therefore legally obliged to give you time off work.
