i read about these extra holidays workers are entitled to from October onwards,is this true and how do you go about claiming them

It's true.

At the moment most full time workers are entitled by law to 20 days paid holiday each year.

Some employees include the 8 bank and public holidays in this entitlement.

From October, employees with be entitled to 24 days paid holiday, including bank and public holidays, and 28 days inclusive in April 2009.

If you already get 20 days or more plus the 8 days, you will not be entitled to more paid holidays.
