Tree Preservation Order
There is a tree in the woods next to our property which had more or less snapped in two.The only thing stopping it falling on our garden is the flimsy branch of another tree, so we need to get it chopped down but it has a preservation order on it.
The wood is privately owned by a housing company who wouldn't do anything about it. Does anyone know who I ring to get it chopped down or get permission to chop it down? Are the council responsible for trees with TPOs on, even on private land? TIA.

They will accept the situation if a tree with a TPO on it has died, but will probably want the HA to replace it with a similar species. They will definitely want to inspect it (to establish what you say is true). Most trees with TPOs on them ARE on private land - that's the whole point - to stop landowners removing valuable landscape trees willy-nilly.
