I would go down the court route as it is more effective and legal, but more importantly cheaper.
Do you have any proof however that you leant this someone the money?
Small claims court I would have thought, if you have records that they owe you the money
You can do it online here:

https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/csmco2/index.jsp

Warn the person who owes you the money beforehand 'unless I receive payment in full by xx/xx/2007 I intend to file for payment through the Courts'

You will have to pay out money beforehand but this is added to your claim.

Hi and thanks for your replies.
Yes I do have proof I paid the money. It wasn't a loan, it was actually for goods. Some goods have been supplied but not all. I realise I am going to have problems proving this if it comes to it but am now at the stage where i'm not too bothered about recovering my money. It's more a case of showing the seller i'm not going to stand for his pathetic excuses. I know he has done the same to another seller to the tune of 700. This person has gone to the police who have been next to useless.
Hope its not through EBay or you wont have much luck
I have successfully helped 3 different people win in the small claims' court for ebay related debts.

Usually they pay up before it even gets to court but these three went all the way.

However, winning in court does not guarantee you will get your money. You may have to take further steps to enforce the judgment.

Thanks for everyone's replies.
Finally lodged with small claims court online. Dead easy except cutting statement down to 1080 digits (I think it was) and then 24 lines!!!
Fingers crossed. The debtor has made a fatal mistake. He has left 2 messages on my phone clearly indicating that he owes me.
