Theft is firstly a Criminal offence, however, if one is found guilty of a theft and the object in question is irretreivable, the Civil court may decide to compensate the owner for the value of their loss. The Civil courts generally involve 'putting people back to their original position' before the loss/injury occured. Called punitive damages - money!
