Would it be wrong to go for a job knowing you were trying to get pregnant?

Don't know if this is in right place but here goes....
Some of you may know I am trying for a baby and yesterday I found out I have an interview for a job which I applied for weeks ago and didn't really hold out any hope of getting it! I work for the NHS so although this new job would be in a different location it would still be for the same employer but I am unsure about how I feel if I were to get the job then find out I was pregnant. Of course it could be next year when it happens but if it is sooner would it make me really unprofessional to just go for the job anyway?

That would be a bit naughty and underhand, to actively apply for a job which she would have to leave, albeit temporarily.

Not being sexist but suppose a man went for a job knowing he would be out of the Country for , say a year, and said nothing.

He could say after being offered the job that he had only just found out about this out of country committment.


You cant say you just found you were pregnat after 3 months.

And also, *if* tig gets the job, it is for the same employer so no implications as far as SMP/AML etc are concerned

well no I I wouldn't want to do that but the interview is in 2 weeks so presumably it would be to start around Aug/Sep which would mean if, and it is a big if, I was to fall pregnant now (I have only just stopped using contraception) I would only be 8 weeks gone.

Theres no need to tell them anything, and as its the same employer you dont need to worry about maternity payments.

Interesting question. My experience is based on a friend whose recently impregnated daughter applied for a teaching post at a higher salary at a different school.

She was offered the job and soon after went on maternity leave leaving the school with the financial burden of supply teachers etc.

Just to bare you in mind that if you do become pregnant before you jet a job or just as you get one, you may need to check contracts as some state that you have to work for so many weeks before conception before you are entitled to maternity pay!

Mine was 16 weeks!

Tetjam it isn't a small family business it is the NHS!! I wouldnt even be changing my employer because it is the same Trust just a different department.
Doc I do see your point and would hate people to think like that about me hence this question to get people's opinions

Your private life is personal and nothing to do with your employers.

If you "knew" you were pregnant for certain at the interview it could come down to a matter of conscience.

Confirmation of pregnancy does not guarantee a happy healthy baby as the outcome. Sorry for the dour comment.

Doc, don't get me wring, I sort of agree with you (only a woman can sort of agree lol) and it would underhand but your friends daughter was under no obligation to let them know at her interview

Andrea, regardless of what a contract says the government say, legally, how many weeks you need to have worked for your employer before being entitled to SMP - right now you must have worked for 26 weeks up to your 25th week of pregnancy. So, you only need to be employed for one week to get SMP.

Another example of employment problems for small businesses, which leads them to employ 3 part-timers in lieu of 1 full time!

An interview would assess the financial burden the employee may put on a small business, or other! Tigwig is obviously specialised in her field for the NHS to offer employment.
