I've not been able to work due to severe health problems, I resigned from the small firm that I worked for and somebody told me I could claim disability payments from one of the Ministry's. We got the paperwork and they asked my old firm what were my NI contributions for 2006/7. I phoned them up, the firm and they said they didn't start paying NI until July 2007 which is Tax Year 2007/8. I'm pretty sure I've got pay slips for that period, I'm getting very nervous that some thing devious has been going on and it might affect what I may or may not get paid by the Ministry, Hsa anybody got a handle on how I should approach this, Cheers Overton P.

When did you start work for the company and did you work full-time?

Check to see if you can find a wage slip just one would help.

Make sure your employer has your correct National Insurance number, one number/letter wrong could mean that your contributions have been allocated to the wrong account.

If you have had deductions made and the company has failed to forward them it will be the company who will be in trouble, you wil need to try and find the proof of the deductions if you find wage slips for the relevant year make an appointment to see a benefit officer who will sort it out for you.
As well as payslips, you should have had a P60 at the end of each tax year. This should show the gross pay and the amount of tax and national insurance you paid in the year.

If you can find the P60 for 06-07 then it should show whether they deducted NI. If they did not, then - unless your weekly pay was very low - they have broken the law. If they did, and did not then pay it over to HMRC they have broken the law. If they told you they didn't start paying NI till 7/07 something seems to be wrong - all employers have to deduct NI & pay it over to HMRC for each employee who earns more than the lower earnings level each week.
