DIY tinted windows

I'm thinking of buying a roll of tint film from eBay to put on my car window. Is it an easy thing to do? Anyone with any advice?

I watched a crime programme only last week, which showed a 4x4 driver being pulled up by the police & asked her to peel off the tinted film on the front windows.

She didn't want to do this herself in case she scratched them, so called her husband to do it. If he'd have refused, the police office was going to nick him - so he did.

I would do as mrs_o suggests & look into it first.

its only legal to tint rear windows i believe, if you do your front ones you will be made to remove them

Thanks for the reply people. I'm thinking having a light tint on the side windows only- nothing to excessive.

it is very hard to do it properly,it would only cost about �100 to have them done by a pro.

Since March 2004 regulations have existed that effectively ban any heavy tinting of the windscreen and front windows. The front side windows need to let in 70% of the available light in order for the tint to be legal. The windscreen must let in 75% of the available light in in order for the tint to be legal. For the rear windows no limitations apply.

I think you can tint any window as long as it's not the windscreen or the front side windows....

To do it properly you would need to remove the windows before applying the film...if you dont fit the film below the point where the rubber seal ( on the inside) presses on the window....the film will definitely catch on the seal every time you wind the window down...and will soon look a total mess.
If you are going ahead... clean your windows ...mix a little detergent with water in a spray bottle...soak the window with the mix, and lay the film on it ..( you can't have too much water)...and now spray the film...
Get a squeegee and starting at the centre, draw the squeegee out to the edge...do this all round until all the bubbles have been removed.....then get a razor blade and trim the excess film... finally re-fit window in door.
If you are thinking of doing your rear screen...beware...any curve in the glass makes it much more difficult.
