working hours for nursing home staff

i work in a nursing home is it against the law to finish shift at 10pm and start next morning at 7.45am

no - not at all!
one's a late shift and one's an early - quite common and you can expect quite a selection of these shifts.
Why do you think it would be illegal?

The Working Time Regulations1998 state

"An adult worker is entitled to a rest period of not less than eleven consecutive hours in each 24-hour period during which he works for his employer."

It seems then that in this case, it is not legal

they must be. i work for the nhs and finish a late at 9pm and can be in for an early the next day at 7am...sucks!

Is it me? If the break is supposed to be 11 hours then 10 pm plus eleven equals 9 am.

Apologies, one of the sectors excluded from the section of the Regulation I quoted is work

"where the worker's activities involve the need for continuity of service or production, as may be the case in relation to -

(i) services relating to the reception, treatment or care provided by hospitals or similar establishments, residential institutions and prisons"
