My son and his fiancee have recently ,jointly signed a six month rental agreement on a flat, unfortunately they have subsequently separated. How does my son stand ? Is he now solely responsible for the rent ? Can he enforce half of the cost on his ex ? Can the landlord pursue her alone for breach of contract ? She has no tangible assets and has returned to her parents,my son will struggle to afford the rent alone.Any ideas ?

if they signed together they will be jointly and severably (SP?) liable. In practice this means that the landlord can pursue both, or either of them for the rent. As your son is actually in the flat, he will clearly be the easiest person to chase as the landlord knows where he is!
The landlord will expect full rent, despite the fact she is not living there anymore, and has the right to expect it off of hime
