Should MPs summer holiday be cancelled?

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, wants MPs to be subjected to a Westminster "lock in" throughout the summer until all three major parties agree on sweeping reforms to clean up Parliament.

Mr Clegg said: "Let us bar the gates of Westminster and stop MPs leaving for their summer holidays until this crisis has been sorted out... for decades, political reformers have been thwarted by the inertia of Westminster. But the expenses scandal has overturned old certainties and made change possible."

Well it does seem like they have rather a lot to talk about and it would certainly be refreshing not to have a silly season (news perspective) this summer.

Although to be honest, if someone got in the way of me going away, I'm not entirely sure how co-operative I'd be. Perhaps just limit the amount of time they can take off.

I think his suggestion is a bit Draconian and sadistic

Afterall , some MP's need the break to supervise the summer cleaning out of their moats and duck houses , before winter comes along - not to mention flipping a few houses

Failure to forego their usual summer break might be seen as a way of ignoring the publics wishes and riding out the present political storm over expenses. The recent scandal has opened a lot of peoples eyes to the type of regime present at Westminster and I believe it is time for MP's to deal with the expenses scandal and take the opportunity to modernise and make the House far more representative of 21st Century life.

Yes totally agree, let us see the Commons packed to bursting point with MPs each and every day not just for 'Prime Minister's Questions'.

Each daily session should then be televised, with MPs standing up in turn reading out their expense accounts, members of the police should also be in attendance to make notes on who needs to be investigated for criminal offences.

All MPs then found guilty of criminal practices, should have all their assets removed, then sentenced to community service, perhaps hand sweeping the streets of London, for all to see.
