Can I be found guilty if no witnesses turn up to court?

Hi all. My friend and i recently had a drunken fight which ended up in me being charged with a common assault. i attended magistrates court and entered a not guilty plea yesterday because my friend and i are now buddies again and he said he wont give evidence against me. he has also made a retraction statement sayin he beleives he instigated the fight but because he had made a statement it is stil going to trial.whilst in court the prosecution said they will be calling two police officers and my friend as witnesses. there were no police officers present during the fight so i think they are simply calling them to prove the state my friend was in when they arrived. they will also be using a 999 call tape as evidence. my big question is if my friend doesnt turn up to court or simply goes and refuses to say anything will they stil be able to find me guilty or will it be thrown out due to lack of eveidence? there are photos of his injuries too (grazed knee and scratches), although i came worse off it was his mother that rang the police so im the 1 being prosecuted!! any advice would be much appreciated, thanks everyone :)

There is litlle likliehood of a conviction in the circumstances you describe.

There seems to be no witnesses to the assault (apart from your pal who seems to have amended his recollection of events) and the photos only prove that injuries were sustained, not how they came about or who inflicted them.
