I am a night worker. At present I work 4 10.5hr shifts in a row followed by 3 nights off.
From next month my employer wants me to work 5 10.5 hr shifts in a row.
Am I correct in thinking that I am restricted by law to only working 48 hours each week unless I opt in for extra...which I have not done?

Do you still have 3 days off, or 2 (i.e. 5 on 3 off, or 5 on 2 off)? If you are still having 3 days off then your average hours per week will be 45.9, below the limit.
Also if you have an hour break in your shift you would only work 47.5 hours per week, again below the limit.
It would suprise me if your employer had not considered the Working Time Directive when they decided to change your hours.
