someone has asked us if they can hire a field from us for a rave. Is it an offence to do this. We do not want to be in trouble with the law. Anyone out there know?

I'm not an expert on this area, but I think you would need an Entertainment licence to do so. There may also be breaches of H&S laws if you do not provide toilet facilities.

Bear in mind that if the police become aware of the rave, they can and do have the power to terminate it.

You also might want to consider insurance (what if someone gets injured?)

Environmental health may get involved if the neighbours complain as well.

I'd be inclined to think very carefully through all the pros and cons before letting possibly hundreds of youngsters onto your land for what could be a 3 day party. And think of the mess afterwards!
I wouldn't do it!

for a start you'd be letting your land be used for the public broadcast of music, and I doubt you (or the rave organisers) has a PPL or a PRS license.

and then assuming that a entertainment license will not be got for the event, you have the (stupid in a lot of places) Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994

scroll down to the "Powers in relation to raves" part. (one of the most draconian bits of law ever introduced IMHO)
