Unusual for me to post a question in here, but more of a discussion than a question. I see quite a few "urban myths" as a result of my work and stuff I read on here.

Here are my top three - can anyone add to these:-

After living with someone for 6 months you become a common law spouse and are automatically entitled to half.

You have to be dependant to make a claim on an estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975

If a shopkeeper advertises something at an incorrect price he has to sell at that price.

Scottish banknotes are legal tender.
How about "Police are not allowed to use deception to catch a criminal because it is entrapment, which is illegal"

or

The Crown Prosecution Service will not prosecute a case unless any witnesses agree to appear in court to testify.....

or are they not myths?.....



"Bank of England banknotes are legal tender in Scotland" not true
and there's "if you commit adultery, you lose your entitlements in the split of any assets."

The only banknotes legal tender in Scotland are Bank of England ones under five pounds. As they no longer issue pound notes, no notes are legal tender now.

Another one

"If I have my receipt the shop where I bought an item is legally obliged to refund or exchange even though there is nothing wrong with it"
"You need a receipt as proof of purchase" not true, it's good evidence but not essential.
When you die your debts die with you.
the benefits people can't obtain your bank accounts, or a (suspected) partner's, or other personal info, without your permission.
If my legal spouse dies without a will, I automatically get all their estate...
If somebody breaks into my house and threatens me and I hit them, I will be found guilty of assault
I find it funny that people think it is illegal to open letters that are delivered to your house but addressed to a previous tennant.

A police officer can't give you a speeding ticket unless he's got his hat on !!!!
Adding to your list:

"All taxi drivers are legally obliged to carry a bag of hay, for their (non-existent) horse".

"You can still be hanged for treason in time of war"

"You can still be hanged for arson in a naval dockyard"

"You're legally entitled to make a single copy of any software which you purchase"

The myth that when buying goods classed under SoGA, the seller is correct to refer the buyer to the manufacturer in case of complaint (Completely overlooking s48). I see this so often and most answers and completely incorrect...
