i bought my home 3 years ago. the people behind me are council tennants. Two years ago they removed the back hedge (they asked me if i minded) and then put up a fence. The thing is they extended their garden on to what was my back access(public land) and now i have to go through their garden to get out the back. i am worried if i sell this will cause problems. the boundaries them selves remain correct.

Please explain more about what this 'back access' is before I can comment further.
Is it a public right of way (footpath)?
What makes you sure it is 'public land'?
Just tell the council, they are the landlords they will not tolerate being put at risk of legal action by their tennants.

Is this path part of your land or some sort of public access path? Are there other properties effected?

Point us at the ariel shot on Google maps and explain in more detail.

OK tell the council that they have occupied land they should not have, the council will rein in their tennants.
