it depends on the circumstances . Say if there was a risk of your grandchildren coming into care and you wished to foster them then yes you would need to know the reason.
Depends on the type of social worker. Is it from mental health or child protection services. If you have any concerns speak to their parents or social workers yourself

Your son can contact SS to ascertain if their are concerns fir his childrens safety. Is he their legal guardian?
Child protection social workers are mainly involved due to concerns about the safety and welfare of children
