metal detecting in public parks

Hi, I was kicked out of my local park today because i was testing out my new metal detector, there was no signs saying i couldnt do it, but the park warden said there was sings, when i asked him to show me he tried coming up with excuses and said there was a by-law... is there anywhere i can see thses by laws as i think metal detecting is a grey area as far as the law stands

The byelaws relating to parks usually appear on the website of the council which owns those parks. If not, they'll be available for inspection at the relevant council offices.

I assume if you find anything you have to dig a hole and too many of these would either look unsightly or you could get people tripping up over them.
