My friends and I are thinking about taking up busking as a hobby. We're going to busk on the streets, as opposed to the tube or inside major stations.

So far the idea is Camden Town, Kings Cross, Old Street, Shoreditch and surrounding areas and possibly all around the West End and Central London.

But we've heard we need to obtain a license? Is this true? And if so, how does one go about this?

Yes you do need a licence, apply to the local council, they will tell you what you need to do,how much to pay etc.
On an associated point to Daffy. is it still possible to get a begging licence in England?
Not all councils need a license. Interestingly, any monies you get from the 'begging' are taxable and reportable to HMRC. Also the owner of the copyright music you play are entitled, by law, to payment from you.

As for license cost you are looking at at least £20.
