your local council rubbish tip should have a tub for them so if you have a box full, it might be worth a wander over.
From February 2010 new laws state all shops selling batteries must have collection bins for your old batteries. Most supermarkets,Town halls, libraries and schools will have collection bins(our local library has one for batteries and used ink cartridges) If you want to check where your nearest recycle facility is go on www.recycle-more.co.uk Just click on the battery symbol and put in your postcode.
Our local recycling centre (aka The Tip) has a collection bin for used batteries. As Igglepiggle suggests, we wait til we have bundle of them (plus foil which is not collected on the doorstep) then take it up to the tip.
The Asda magazine I picked up today said that all their stores have battery containers where you can dispose of used batteries.
All recycling centre must by law accept used batteries...and usually have a specific "bin" assigned for them if you look around....or just ask!
