In our house deeds the conveyance was made to both me and wife (my name plus my wife's name). How can we tell whether we are "joint tenants" or "tenants in common"?

If you are tenants in common there will be something like this on the Registered Title (or deed of conveyance):
"No disposition by a sole proprietor not being a Trust Corporation shall be registered without an order of the Court" .

If not, you are joint tenants.
