I bought a used Audi TT 2007 at the end of July 09 from a local Audi garage. The car had 23,500 miles on the clock and i have just been to the garage to have a slow puncture to be repaired to be told that i need the front 2 tyres replacing and that they are verging illegal (advised to replace by the end of the week). My question is, are Audi within their rights to sell a used car knowing that the tread on the tyres are so low and will need replacing very soon ( i have done just under 5000 miles in this car). I know they were legal when it was sold to me. The car was over £23,000 and this is the type of service you would expect from a cowboy not from a garage like Audi. Any views would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

i work at a dealership and we do a used car check on every car an note findings including tyre tread, i would suggest anything 2.5mm and below should be changed ask for there report and go from there.

whats the problem - they were well above legal requirements, the tyres have done another 5k - so they can't have been to bad, you just don't change tyres for the fun of it, you should have spotted this at the time & if you were concerned about them you could have haggled a bit during the negotiations, i suppose you had to put fuel in it as well, i can't see a problem with that - whoever you buy from - i just sold a car with a tyre that was getting low & pointed it out to the buyer & it had passed an MOT the day before. mind you it was only a £3k car!
you live & learn.

No they defo wont last another 6 months, hes shown me the tyres and they are definately worn. I was just surprised that after spending that amount of money on a car i havnt even had 6 months out of the tyres thats all. Im afraid the fact that i am female does not help one little bit, im certainly not one to get under a bonnet or go inspecting tyres, im obviously too trustworthy. Thanks for your input anyway, lesson learnt, lol

Oh thank you very much for that Donna, i have spoken with Audi today and they are going to call me back tomorrow. I will definately ask for this info. Again, many thanks for your help :-)
If you had taken time to check out the design problems associated with the TT you would have picked up the fact that the car is so sensitve to its suspension errors that tyre bills roll in with each "tenth tank" full so to speak.

Well i didnt check all the technical details did i as i previously mentioned. I am a female who went to the garage on her own and trusted that i would be getting a good car from them. I drive a car but i dont know anything about them. I did actually post the question to see if i would be able to take this up with them not to be told i should have checked all this out before, i already know that i should have!
telling you to replace them by the end of the week sounds odd, they cant make a statement like that without knowing how many miles and what sort of driving you do.
It is a fact that front wheel drive cars , in particular sports types can go through tyres fairly regularly the make of tyre can also be a factor. Expensive brand names are not a guarantee that a tyre will last longer
If it was a main Audi dealership I would be v. shocked and yes they are acting like cowboys! Maybe threaten to complain to Audi Head Office?

Good luck
how can they be cowboys selling a vehicle that needs a couple of tyres after 5,000 miles ???...it was legal when sold and thats not far off average mileage...NO used car dealer Audi or otherwise will replace perfectly useable tyres before a car is sold...

Well i would just like to finish this post off - after expressing my views to Audi they have agreed to replace my 2 front tyres. They state that when a 2nd hand car is sold if the tyre tread is 3mm or under then they automatically replace the tyres and as mine was just slightly above that limit as a gesture of good will they will replace them for me. So Chas2008 Audi do replace legal tyres for their customers!

Thank you for all your input - im more than happy with the outcome off Audi.
