TESCO ripping people off again!

Tonight I had to return a laptop cooler to Tesco, as the fan broke on first use. I bought it about 3 weeks ago when it was half price. When I took a replacement to the desk, the bulldog (sorry I mean shop assistant) said that I would now have to pay the full price!

I had a bit of a verbal with her, saying that this would be in breach of SOGA, and she said
"Well last week I got a man to pay £100 when replacing a faulty Blu-ray that was in the sale", and I replied saying that he was an idiot and Tesco were thieves.

Cutting a long story short, she agreed to simply exchange and I walked away smirking.

Has anyone else heard of their local Tesco trying to rip people off this way? I know they 'adjust' prices to make sales look better, but this was beyond.

if the goods are faulty then they can offer a replacement, it doesn't matter how much the price of the item is at the pint you return it if yoiu have your reciept, but i have never ever heard of any store asking a customer to pay the difference on an exact exchange when the offer price has finished. That's ridiculous and i think the member of staff needs retraining on her company's returns policy.

The only time the assistant could have made an issue out of the price is if the product had gone down in price but then the price had gone back up again and you did not have proof of purchase, meaning you could have bought it at the reduced price and then return it when it has gone back up in price and you ask for the higher price as an exchange or refund.

Luckily I did have the receipt, and I specifically asked for an exchange, so there was no question about whether I was trying to simply make some money from them.

I'm going to speak to the Manager tomorrow, as I'd hate to think this was store policy!
Sometime last year Tescos done a couple of offers where if you spent £30 you could buy a pack of beer for £5 instead of £10.
I spent £30 got a pack of beer and went through the checkout.
In my car I noticed that I had been charged £10 for the beer.
At customer services they said they were sorry and went to give me a£5 refund, I pointed out a sign behind them that clearly stated if they overcharged they would refund twice the amount overcharged , I got £10 refund.
Guess what.......the exact same thing happened a week later same outcome another £10 refunded....RESULT.

Eddie you are lucky as often they have a disclaimer about how many each customer can have of the special offers.

They could also have taken the goods back and not sold them to you and put the mistake right as they are entitled to do so.

However they would have looked light numpties if they had...
I like tescos return policy. A few years back I brought the BBC version of Pride & Prejudice as it was on sale for about £15 or somthing... anyway, I noticed they charged me the full amount when I checked the reciept so I went to customer services who returend the money I'd paid and gave me the DVD for free. At the time their policy was to give it you for free if they'd been the ones to make a mistake. I was really chuffed :c)
I think your approach probably doesn't help you. Calling a shop assistant a 'bulldog' wont do you too many favours. He or she was possibly making a genuine mistake.

Also, saying 'Tesco were thieves' and are 'trying to rip people off' is a bit daft really.

Perhaps not having 'verbals' with the shop assistants may get you better service in future? Just a thought.
returns policy has nothing to do with your faulty electrical goods, no matter what offer they may have had
Up to 6 months after purchase you are entitled to a free replacement because the fault will be classed as inherent in the SOGA - store policy or not you were entitled under law to a replacement with no extra charge

Twenty20: I'm sorry if you think that i've offended your profession, but If you believe that I called the shop assistant a 'bulldog' to her face, then you need help. I was very polite, but stressed the fact that if Tesco planned on charging me extra for exchanging a faulty product, then they would be in breach of the SOGA.

IMO if a sales assistant is given the authority to process exchanges / refunds, then they should clearly be aware of store policy regarding the same.

And yes, I stand by my claim that they are 'ripping people off'. There was an article in the Telegraph recently about a wine critic who had bought a bottle in their half price sale. She later realised that she had already purchased the same bottle 4 months previously for £2.00 cheaper than it was in the sale. Just another example of their ethics.
