Road Tax

Here's a simple one from a new car owner.... my road tax runs out soon... how do i renew it? I'm assuming i just take my MOT certificate and registration details to the post office? Any "pot-holes" i may not know about?

DVLA should send you a renewal document, (roughly two weeks before expiry) you take that, your MOT, your insurance certificate and payment along to the Post Office and they give you a shiny new tax disc. I believe you can also do it by post but I wouldn't fancy letting my docs get lost in the post.

Only certain Post Offices issue these discs, but there are quite a few of them.  i taxed my car yesterday and was lucky enough to find that a local PO issues tax discs.  You should be able to find a list of those that do by visiting the website

As well as the MOT and the DVLA form, I'd make sure that you take your insurance certificate and not renewal notices etc. etc., as these will not be accepted by the post office. 

You might be lucky and be given a password on the DVLA form to renew on the internet - hassle free and efficient.

Hi,

I have a new car (05 reg) i havent yet had a MOT due to it only needing after 2 years/18000 miles. Will i be able to tax my car and will the person taxing know this?
