hey all, i was hoping to escape england and go and get married abroad. We have chosen the maldives and on looking onto enquiries on the net apparently it not a legal marriage in the uk. Basically it wont be upheld in the uk and there would be no point in the ceromony?
Does anyone know anything on this as i'm quite disappointed!
I don't know anything about the legal side of it, but you could go and have your big wedding in the Maldives and then just nip to the registry office here either before or afterwards to get the official stuff done..
My daughter got married in the Dominican Republic, her marriage certificate is in Spanish. The marriage was blessed four weeks later in church in the UK. Nothing illegal about it.
You can only have a legal wedding in the Maldives if you are Muslim. Other than that it is only a wedding blessing. This is not the same as getting married in another country which is recognised here. I got married in Cyprus. This is legally recognised here without me registering or depositing anything or having any kind of ceremony here. This would not be the case in the Maldives - it would be symbolic only and you would not be married in law.
