Changing Locks when moving house

There is a post in Home and Graden about changing the locks on your house when you have just moved in, I don't know anyone who has ever done this, but it seemed to be the done thing on the thread. Is that really what people do? I've never done it in all the house moves I have had over the years and it wouldn't ever occur to me to do so, am I too trusting??

I had a new front door altogether so yes, new locks when I moved in.

now you mention it .... i have never thought about it , but i will now thanks lol , i did swap the locks in my old house when i kicked my ex out because he wouldn't give me my front door key back , because he is so thick he wouldn't have thought oh ill check the back door see if it fits lol

I wouldn't even think that anyone would want to take anythink I have. I dont have jewels, money or anything worth nicking....so, if they can make a living out of my belongings, they are more than welcome ;o)

I did it when I moved into my flat, didnt in my new place as brand new

would you also then change the locks on your car? ... saying that the one time I did move was into a brand new house ...

I've moved about 15 times and never done it. The last time we moved, we found a front door key lying on the driveway!

It depends - if you buy an 8 bedroomed house for several million in Surrey, there's probably no need to change locks.
If you buy at auction an ex-council terrace in Moss Side, that's been repossessed, it might be a good idea.

i think vagrant was referring to the type of people that you are buying from rather than what there is to pinch!

4 - you're probably right - I think I chose a bad example - my point is, it depends on who lived there before, and where it is.

i didnt when i bought my first house as it was new. When i left and moved to a place alone, a flat that had been rented out to various people over the years i changed the locks the day i moved in.

I also changed the loo seat lol

Bit of a different system up here maybe. In general, you view the property with the seller and therefore build up a relationship with them and I guess that you make a judgement based on those meetings.
