Hi all. I paid a dealer £250 as a holding deposit on a car for my wife with the understanding that the monthly payments would be £X. They agreed to this saying thats what they could do. £X only and nothing further. They came back today and said that my wifes payments are higher than agreed and they need a further £500.00 deposit. My wife said no ,we agreed on the figure when the papers were signed and thats what she has budgeted for. They have agreed to cancel the sale and refuse to refund my holding deposit. Are they correct or do I have any recourse of action without costly legal fees? Thanking all in advance for any help.

Sounds like a Small Claims job at the County Court. Shouldn't be a problem since you got it in writing that the deposit of £500 was in part payment for the purchase of a vehicle with payments of £x per month for y months. Job done.
What's that? - you didn't get such a receipt for your £500? Hmmmm.
