Is it possible to obtain a copy of a will
6 Answers
My mother died in May 2010 and I wonder whether it is possible for me to obtain a copy of the will, or at least know its contents. The executors, my brother and sister, will not allow me or my other sister to have any details of the will. My mother always led us to believe that, after some gifts to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her children were equal beneficiaries.

Once probate has been obtained the will becomes a public document. Anyone can obtain a copy of the grant (which includes a copy of the will). If you're unsure of whether probate has been granted (or you know that it hasn't) you can enter a 'standing search' with the Probate Registry. It costs just £5. If probate is granted within the next 6 months you automatically receive a copy of the grant. If it isn't, you can pay another fiver to extend the search for a further 6 months.
Full information should be on the website of HM Probate Service, which is here:

However that server is currently down. You might be able to view it later tonight or, more likely, tomorrow. Alternatively, look under 'Probate Registry' in the business section of the Phone Book.

has probate been granted yet? after probate has been granted the will becomes a public document
if so, then contact the probate office for that area and ask how to get the copy. Or look here http://www.hmcourts-s...e.gov.uk/cms/1159.htm

I was told (when my mil died) that as a main benificary of the will my children and therefore me (my children were only 5 at the time) have a right to see the will before probate has been granted. Is this true?
Anyway WHY hasn't your brother and sister included you in their dealings with the will? What has happened for them to exclude you from this? If probate has been granted then they should be starting to distribut the assets by now!
