I despair at the lack of knowledge, regarding the above.
This morning,as I was walking home,a lady,riding a bike,asked me if I could let her pass.
My immediate reaction was to let her know, that she should use the road,as required by law.
I was left gobsmacked by her reply:- "Its too dangerous"
Surely something can be done to police this in a correct manner, with the emphasis being
on police.
it is too dangerous on the roads, but cyclist's on the pavement can be dangerous to pedestrians, like the knob who nearly knocked me over the other day. if i see him again i'm shoving a stick throgh his spokes :-)
We have the same problem with kids around her too. Although I know they do cycling proficiancy (totally spelt wrong) because it happens right outside my house. However, I would say 70% do not have even 1 light installed on their bike and none of them wear helmets, so even though there is a cycle lane around the village, it's safer for them to use the pavement. Just not for me to walk on it.
That annoys the hell out of me as well. I would have been in trouble for giving her a mouthfull if she asked me to get out of the way. The road is too dangerous, so it`s OK to knock down a pedestrian then.
When my youngest was still in his pram I once took him out for a walk. A cyclist shouted at me, saying the pram took up too much room on the pavement and I'd left no room for him!
Actually there are some areas round here where I drive past a cyclist on the road and wonder why they don't just use the pavement. But that's generally only when the pavement is on a stretch of road that not many people are likely to be walking down.
Some of our local footpaths are designated as "permissive" allowing both cyclists and pedestrians.......seems to work ok, haven't heard of any casualties. Now what really p1sses me off is mothers with pushchairs walking two abreast who stop and start nattering to another one coming the other way. Total log jam. Ignorant bovines.
But the roads aren't dangerous. I've been cycling around town for years - the only accident I've had was on an off road cycleway when a dog ran under my wheel. If you keep to the rules of the road and obey traffic lights I find motorists are careful enough. I can understand young children riding on the path as long as they respect pedestrians but it does annoy me to see adults riding on the path.
Elderly ladies with shopping trolleys are good at that too, they seem to be especially keen on stopping in shop doorways for a natter.
I ask them "is this a private doorway or can anyone use it"..... normally gets me a filthy look as though I'm inconveniencing them by trying to walk through a door!
I agree with her - The road is too dagerous - something needs to be done though as it is not good that they have to ride on the pavement which is after all meant for pedestrians. The cycle lanes are really silly just painting a line in the road. Trouble is space, so surely it's safer to cycle on the pavement until such time as a better option is found.
shame we can not be more like the Dutch and have separate cycling lanes to the road and pavement. Even though Cameron is a cyclist (or an ex one), I dont think we will be seeing any investment in this area though.
There`s nothing like a good moan! If I get two side by side pushchairs, I stop dead in the pavement and they usually get the right idea about going single file to get around me.
Gelda...I was knocked off my bike by a bloke in a transit opening his door into me. If a car was coming in the other direction It would have been serious. It's too dangerous...and car drivers hate cyclists.
