Sentence length and when It is reduced

If somebody is sentenced to 2 years their sentence can be (is?) cut by half automatically ie: they will only serve 12 months. At what length sentence does this not apply?

New Judge

It applies to all "dterminate" sentences (that is, those that are expressed as x years/months/days). When an Indeterminate sentence or a Life sentence is passed the judge makes a minimum recommendation and the individual is not considered for parole until that period has elapsed.
