Having noticed that there is more activity on AnswerBank, during working hours, and if these measures were to catch on in other Council and Government offices, could it all have an adverse effect on AB?

I would say that, if true given its source - and it could well have been exaggerated out of context, it is somewhat narrow-sighted by the management. Allowing employees to gossip etc allows them to rest and re-group and contribute more over time, as well as be more creative, that is if any individual 'nous' is needed.......

The managers who sent the email were told off anyway AOG.

AOG, this has been the case with my public sector employers for years, since the advent of social networking sites. We are barred from accessing any sites like this or Facebook, eBay, any gaming sites - the computers just won't let us access the URLs - and in my opinion, quite right too. We are paid to work and do the day job which keeps me more than busy, not faff around chatting to our mates. I know it's an old-fashioned view, but if my colleagues want to look at FB they have to leave the office and go do it on their mobiles, their absence from the desk is soon noticed. Two people over the years have been summarily dismissed for flouting this rule. We're not allowed radios in the offices either, or to watch the cricket.
Im sure some of the ABers who use from their workplace are not abusing it-hardly worth getting disciplined for when jobs are like hens teeth,
Th AB poll comparison does suggest older people use it -but some like myself dont have to work and as someone else pointed out theres a fair few shift workers on here.
Therefore I dont think it will have an adverse effect on AB.

One of our local councils supplied Blackberries to most of their office staff whether they needed them for their work or not. It was described by some as empire building. Therefore apart from gossip, the capital cost and monthly subscription was enormous. Since the cut back most of them have been recalled with dozens of // unnecessary laptops // . I don't know how much
time and money is wasted on these various activities but I can imagine considerable sums may be involved.

When I'm at work I don't usually get a chance to do things on the net or come on AB. I've usually got about 3 or 4 excel spreadsheets to work on which have to be completed by certain times of the day every day.
Around 5 years ago several members of my unit (nearly 200 staff) were dismissed for having ladies with not much on as their screen savers and also looking at soft porn images.
