My son moved from an address 2 years ago and is convinced he didn`t owe any money to his then gas company, but he has now received a bill for an outstanding amount owed. He doesn`t now have any proof of payment as after a year he disposed of his old bills thinking every thing was paid. How does he stand about having to pay what is supposedly owed?

So he sent in a reading on the day he left with a forwarding address for them to send the final bill to?
Question Author
Yes, he says he has paid the final bill, and he took the final reading from his previous address and also the start reading from his new address. Now they say he owes £100.
Write to the company stating a dispute. Ask them to provide all bills and final settlement readings. Then take it from there.

Will do , thankyou Lydeard.
Also, if he gets a statement from his bank for that time, he can prove he made the final payment.
This is a scam, ignore it. Over 1 year after I left a flat I got a similar letter from a debt collection agency - it was sent to the flat and forwarded to me by the new tenant. I still had the paperwork showing the bill was paid. I called the debt collection agency and they had no information about meter readings, dates of bills, or amounts on the bills, they just said I owed some money. I did a Google search on the name of the agency and found many people with the same problem. The advice given was to ignore the letter. I suppose I should have taken it to trading standards.

I have just seen the bill and it is from SE Electric so it`s not a scam, but thanks anyway.
