Taking someone else's child abroad on holiday to US
Would the stay at home parents have to give some kind of permission letter to the travelling parents to state that they were taking the SAH parents child abroad with full permission. If this is the case, is it ok for the parents just to write one themselves or does it have to be witnessed by anyone.

I think it would depend on the age of the child, but I suspect that a simple phone call would be enough for immigration or whoever you think might want some sort of documentation.

You should get a legalized document to carry with you if you don't want any problems. There are strick rules in the US about taking children in and out of the country. A father can not take a child out of the country without permission from the mother etc.So if it were me doing this, I would get some type of legal document to prove that I had the right to have this child with me just to be safe and not get held up with the athorities and spoil a nice trip.
we travelled a few years ago to Orlando with my husband & grandaughter aged 6, I had recently remarried so had not changed my passport to my new surname so we 3 all had different names on our passports, they picked this up at immigration and sent us over to customs where a different guy from the other custom officers appeared took my grandaughters case opened it and started to ask her "pointed questions" about the three of us which she answered, after a few minutes our little girl said very politely "excuse me but I think you are very nosey and in a minute my grandma is going to get very cross with you indeed ", the guy said its okay you can go ! Hindsight we should have taken a letter from my son giving permission with his contact phone number.
