NHS & Other Companies - Royal Wedding (National Bank Holiday?)

The Prime Minister David Cameron said the date would be a bank holiday when Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their wedding date, but the Department of Health is allowing each hospital to decide its own arrangements for time off and pay.

Upto now we were told/assumed that we would be given the day off, now it is up in the air and seems like we will be refused the day off!

I thought we were supposed to be having the day off to celebrate - street parties and all that!

Exactly, maybe we should give all the police, ambulance and fire brigade staff the day off as well? What about the TV crews? Won't be much to watch if they don't work.

You should have been told it's a bank holiday, not that you would automatically get a day off.

Why should anyone who's not attending the wedding deserve to have the day off?

Bank holidays are good.....the country still needs to operate though. If you work for someone like the NHS at least you get a day in lieu...or extra pay...or something.

No time in leiu or pay though is a little tight. I know the conutry is struggling abut let's face it most people look forward to their bank holiday time and we all work hard - we deserve the odd day here & there. My gripe is the fact that you are told one thing and then it is being changed, I am pretty sure my contract states I am entitled to public holidays off - this is a public holiday. I don't really want that day off specifically but I would like the time back.

I would guess that your contract says you're entitled to the bank holidays (is it 8?) before this one was announced...

As in 20 days holiday + 8 days bank holidays...

So until they have updated the contracts you're not entitled to it.

It's been common knowledge at my hospital for ages. We were told to block clinic slots for that day but not to cancel completely as we may not be closed... It's not like I'll be watching or have any interest in this wedding so I really couldn't give a monkeys whether it's a bank holiday or not.
