The police explained that because the bulbs are low energy people will be able to leave them on when they are out without running up huge bills. Officers distributing the lights will also offer residents crime prevention advice.
An Inspector said: "External security lighting and leaving a light on in the home when you go out can greatly reduce your chances of falling prey to burglars."
The police use many methods to tackle burglary that include targeting known offenders through covert surveillance, warrants and curfew and bail condition checks. Neighbourhood policing teams also provide high-visibility patrols in hotspots.

• Keep valuables out of sight in the home, away from windows and doors.
• Use timer switches on your lights if you are going to be away for a long period.
• Ask neighbours to keep an eye on your home and do the same when they are away.
