She was not a virgin and therefore not considered a good bet to become Queen, so Charles never proposed and she went off and married someone else.
But Charles and Camilla carried on their "affair" (her husband was given an important job in the Queens household to keep him quiet.).
Charles seemed to be making no attempt to find a wife and produce an heir or two (very important in a future King) so the Queen and Queen Mother started match making.
They found this young innocent "virgin" in Diana and told Charles he had to marry her.
Diana fell in love with her prince, but he did not fall in love with her, but they got engaged anyway.
Everyone remembers the day they announced their engagement.
The reporter said to Diana "do you love him" and she replied "of course"
He then said to Charles "do you love her" and he replied "whatever love is".
We should have all seen then writing on the wall that day.

So Diana got engaged to Chalres, but the royal family treated this innocent young girl very badly. They gave her little support and left her to learn how to cope with the fame and pressure on her own.
Even though Charles was engaged to Diana he carried on seeing Camilla.
As the wedding got nearer Diana began to have doubts and almost called it off a few times.
But they got married, but Charles still saw Camilla, and often left Diana on her own with no idea what she was supposed to do or how to play her role.
She began to protest and get upset, and this made the rest of the royal family dislike her.
The more upset she became the more it drove Charles into the arms (bed?) of Camilla.
Even though they had two children the marriage went downhill fast as Charles spent more and more time with Camilla and less and less time with Diana.
Diana began to be a "pain in the butt" and the royal family began to squeeze her out. She began have affairs, and eventually of course they divorced.
By then Diana had learnt how to "play" the media and press, turning up at events with stunning clothes and fine jewellry.
The royal family began to hate her even more, and going out with Dodi was the last straw.
It is a shame nobody saw the writing on the wall all those years ago, it would have saved everyone a lot of pain and heartache.
Try to watch "The Queen" with Helen Mirren for a great view of what went on in the royal houshold after Diana died.
