Should the family be charged with blackmail and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice?
Family finds out that their child has been assaulted by a paedophile maths teacher, and instead of going to the police, they demand (and get) £18,000 from him, which they use as a deposit on a new home:

Surely this is blackmail?

My guess is the child in question is probably an older teenager now, and hopefully well on the way to a position where he doesn't need his (toxic) parents around.
The offences were in 2004 and the bloke involved is a maths teacher - my understanding is that you only get subject specific teachers in secondary school (but I could be wrong).
By the way, I'm basing this on this report only. The parents haven't been charged or convicted, so you could argue that this was a clever ruse by the defendents lawyers...but somehow, I doubt it.

///Judge Ian Alexander said: "This case is very different to the one I thought it was. I am staggered. I have never come across this before and I am not sure how it affects the sentence. He has effectively been fined £18,000 outside of the judicial system"///
Looks on the face of it like it is accurate.
