Has Coronation Street gone rubbish lately? Carla suddenly becoming alcoholic, then just as suddenly drinking wine again without any hint of a problem. Carla suddenly falling in live with Peter Barlow in the space of an episode or two. Claire deciding to run abroad after assaulting Tracey, without anyone saying 'no, don't do it'. Dev (he who owns a chain of shops) suddenly being skint and desperately needing the stolen £5k. Tina, prepared to risk everything with the sham marriage for someone that she once worked with. Steve, about to spend time in Blackpool with Tracey and Amy, behind Becky's back. I know Steve's not the brightest button, but it is ridiculous. Corrie seems to be on the slippery slope and becoming more like Neighbours every episode, with shallow storylines and characters behaving completely, well, out-of-character. What do you think?

I agree with all the comments here and I thought the John Stape storyline was the absolute pits! I don't like Fiz so much now either, she's not as feisty as she used to be. I think the producers need to give the writers a kick up the backside, or get some new ones in.

However, I guess I'll still be watching in the future - its the only soap I do watch.
All the soaps are the same, if they reflected our real lives, we would be as bored with the programmes as we are with our lives! That's the problem they all have. I'm on the wrong side of 60, have lived in a few different places, taught for 30+ years etc, a fairly normal life but I know only 1 person who has committed a murder, an ex-pupil, and no-one else, to my knowledge, who has even been to prison. Corrie has lost its humour, it used to be daft and far-fetched, but at least it was funny!
I agree with everything you've said-I'm 3 weeks behind, need to watch ITV playr, but from tv guides know whats going on and probably won't bother-the John storyline is rubbish also, but sham wedding number 1, 2-Tracy then Kylie returning have ruined everything
i am a life-ling corrie fan and agree with everything written here.
I know they must run out of storylines, but we just like to see the everyday mumbles, grumbles and funny moments of ervey day life. I do't know why they think we need sensational stories!
I remeber in the late seventies, early eighties, when the titles were on, my brother used to shout "Quick! It's a john stevenson!" He was sucha great writer. You just knew it would have some funny lines - especially bet/alec etc.
I wonder what happened to him?
I must say, i have laughed a couple of throwaway comments said by mary, norris, shaun and steve latety, but not half as much as I's like to.
I hope you do send a copy to the producer, Arti, he too was one of the better writers.
^^^sorry for mistakes - sun is on my screen!

Okey doke :)
I have just caught up with Thursday & Friday's episodes and quite frankly they were boring. It is the Xin storyline that is really getting me down, I wouldn't mind it perhaps if the actress could act, I have said it on another forum, all the soaps seem to be going downhill
Question Author
Regarding all soaps 'going downhill', It may be a case of budgets being cut. I only really watch Corrie, so I can't comment on the content of the others. I don't think Corrie is chasing ratings because it is more-or-less on a par with Eastenders, so I'm wondering if they are chasing awards, of which Eastenders seems to have a near monopoly.
I think the writers insult our intelligence with some of the story-lines they dream up. John/Fizz; Graham/Xin; Absolutely dreadful. I hope they buck up their ideas before they lose all their viewers.
''the street'' has lost its feeling of everyday life with the ridiculous storylines and ''sub plots''...i know you cant run a succesful soap opera on storylines just involving ken and diedre popping down to the rovers for a pint and a glass of red wine but the stupid plots that are going on are an insult to the intelligence of the viewers ...its getting as bad as eastenders..and they win all the tv awards...so i guess that speaks volumes about the demise of coronation street...
Terrible over-acting by Graeme and Xin. And it's a ridiculous storyline anyway. :o(

But Eddie, we can't........we're addicted to it. :o)
NOT watch it??
Are you mad?
The producer is gay and there are now lots of gay characters (Sean and his boyfriend, Todd and his boyfriend, Sophie and Sian), plus a cross dressing male

How long before there's more gay than straight characters?

It ain't reflective of a normal English street
Question Author
mmm.... interesting, Joe. Are you aware that the man who conceived the programme is gay?
Yes, but is that relevant?

A programme should be to entertain the masses, not a soapbox for someone to force his persuasions upon them
