just had a conversation about comics of yesteryear, does anyone other that me remember Weart Willy & Tired Tim in a comic called Chips ? or Pansy Potter and Keyhole Kate ?
Oooh, by googling 'Harold Hare' (who was my favourite character) I've just remembered the name of the other comic I read when I was little. It was 'Jack and Jill'. (I still find myself using Harold Hare's catchphrase of 'goody goody gumdrops' from time to time!)
I remember all of them, Weary Willie, Tired Tim, Pansy Potter, Keyhole Kate from my own childhood and the ones which Chris mentions from reading them to my children.
nice to know that others fondly remember them too ! even now I describe our butcher as a Deserate Dan lookalike! and someone has Lord Snooty as their avatar.
Also can look back on Dan Dare in the Eagle that was my brother's favourite and we used to swap comics with our friends..
Bash St Kids, Dee Sa - and yes, I know a few guys (and gals) who resemble Plug. then there was Roy of the Rovers - and the big Melchester Derby - don't jknow where the inspiration came for that one - lol
I remember the first issue of the Beezer in 1956. It contained a free gift, a cardboard/brown paper banger. My poor mother visited every newsagent in town (about 30) to get me one without success. She mentioned this to a friend and two days later the same friend brought me one. I was over the moon. The banger lasted all of twenty minutes before it split. Funny how little things stick in the mind from so long ago.
I remember the first Beezer too....had great fun scaring my grandmother with the banger...... and the girlies might remembertr June and Schoolfriend and Bunty... how innocent...no mention of kissing and bras until you were old enough for Jackie
