<<and just because i don't wish to watch some poor soul pass away on tv that makes me uninformed.>>

em that's a stupidly incorrect comment. I didn't say you were uninformed i said being informed would be a good reason to watch it. One does not equal the other.

<<zeuhl I am open minded, about many things, its a stupid comment, one i would take great offence to if you had said it to my face.>>

What you choose to take offence at is up to you. Please don't expect me to be too concerned about those choices you make; either on this forum or face to face.
.
no i don't expect so. opinions differ.
Quite so.

Have a nice evening :-)
No disrespect meant to those who have witnessed differently, but not all deaths are painful/unpleasant. My uncle died a few weeks ago. I was with him and it was a very peaceful passing, he appeared to be pain-free, and he died while the priest was administering the last rites.

That's exactly how he would've chosen to go, had he been given a choice. I found it quite comforting.
I believe it should be everyone's right to call their own time when faced with a progressive and impossible to counter deterioration. I shall be watching.
I hope through this program Terry raises awareness of what is and should be more available as final end of life options.
I shall not be watching the programme but I would like the choice to end my own life if I had a terminal illness with no chance of recovery - and yes my family are aware of my views.

i am sorry if any aber has been distressed by my question, it was never my intention i like some feel " when the time comes" i would like to have a say in when where and how, but this is rarely the case,
I think you are missing the point em,the programme wasn't to show someone dying, the program was trying to show the case for assisted suicide, which is still illegal here yet legal in other countries such as Switzerland. The guy in question had motor-neuron disease which is an long and particularly nasty disease and he wanted to end his life without putting himself and his family through the pain of it.They wanted to show a death that wasn't horrific ,and it wasn't.I,too have seen my mum die slowly with Alzheimers and I would have loved to help her along with a painless injection but sadly we are not allowed. In my opinion,it's a ridiculous law that says we cannot ask someone to help us die with dignity when the time comes.
I watched the programme - it was very emotional, but I don't think it was propagandist as some are saying.
My mother has been diagonised today with the big A - she has no wish to have her life terminated and always has been anti-suicide. I came close a few years back for various reasons.......never told her though.

However, I know that I (we) need to respect her wishes and even though I agree with the right to agree to my own termination, I can not be in any position to advocate for her or others.

However, also I can not condone what happened in this programme as, effectively it is illegal in this country and is still classified as self murder. I did live in acountry that some euthanasia is allowed, the Netherlands........

The key point is we need to get the law changed here, with the appropriate checks and balances to ensure total gravitas in the decision - and not rely on the Swiss to do our work....and didn't they recently vote to ban foreign "candidates" from going this route? I missed seeing the outcome of their referendum and haven't googled it, yet.
Anne, I saw your post on another thread....you think the death was undignified. Can I ask why you think that?

hi mrs c, i posted on rowanwitch post on the 13th, after i watched the programme and the following discussion, but id be more than happy to discuss my views with you if you wish, anne
Terry Pratchett is in an difficult position. If he waits too long he may lose the will to go. If he goes soon he looses years of good life.
loses^^^^

sandy, i dont think terry p. would be considered for the " clinic " because he has been diagnosed with dementia.
I thought it was excellent in the way the program was presented, I think his death was very dignified indeed, especially compared to the alternative.
Ann, whilst he has been diagnosed with a dementia he still currently has mental capacity, I feel that while he still has mental capacity enough to make an informed decision they would certainly consider him.
They 'considered' a couple who presented themselves as deeply depressed and accepted them both.
This was reported in the UK press a couple of years back.
Anne, I've posted a reply on the other thread.

RATTER, watching the programme and the followng discussion i got the impression " the clinic " would not accept anyone with dementia, but i may be wrong,
